Technical Documentation

On the map:

37,839 New Orleans homeowners received Road Home grants to rebuild their homes, as of September 18, 2008

Density of Road Home Option 1 recipients
(properties per square mile)
Density graph

What is this data?

"RH 1" data represents the number of New Orleans homeowners who have received Road Home grants to rebuild their home. In other words, they closed on their Road Home application and they chose Option 1.

Road Home Stay

If a block has several "RH 1" closings, that means that several homeowners on this block have received Road Home money and declared that they will rebuild their home. Some of these recipients may already be living in their homes and receiving mail, and some may not. Some may have started to rebuild, and some may not have started to rebuild yet.

Remember: Not all properties are accounted for in this data, because not all properties were eligible. Only pre-Katrina homeowners could apply for these grants.

Note on accuracy: Road Home data is geocoded to census blocks by ICFI and its subcontractors. The GNO Community Data Center is unable to verify the accuracy of the Road Home geocodes or their consistency with the geocoding methodology applied to data of residential addresses actively receiving mail.

On the map:

4,212 New Orleans homeowners sold their damaged house to the state of Louisiana, as of September 18, 2008

Density of Road Home Option 2 & 3 recipients
(properties per square mile)
Density graph

What is this data?

"RH 2 & 3" data represents the number of damaged properties that have been sold to the state of Louisiana. These pre-Katrina homeowners closed on their Road Home application and they chose Option 2 or 3.

Road Home Relocate/Sell

If a block has several "RH 2 & 3" closings, that means there are several properties on this block that were sold to the Louisiana Land Trust (LLT) who is responsible for maintaining them until they are turned over the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) to be sold to a new owner.

Remember: If you see zero "RH 2 & 3" closings in a block, that does not mean that all properties in that block will be rebuilt. Properties that were vacant or rented before the storm were not eligible for Road Home grants. Such properties might be fixed up, demolished or simply abandoned by their owners, but this information is not captured in this data set.
