Median household income

Definition: The median divides the household income distribution into two equal parts: one-half of the cases falling below the median household income and one-half above the median. (In other words, if we lined up all the household incomes from the smallest to the largest household income for this area, the median for this area would be the number right smack in the middle of that line-up of numbers. For households, the median income is based on the distribution of the total number of households including those with no income.)
