Guide to figuring out what Census tracts cover the area where you work

  1. Print this page and follow these instructions from the printed page.

  2. Get on the Web and go to www.census.gov

  3. In the left column, click on American FactFinder: .

  4. In the left column, click on the street address link: .

  5. On the next page, you should see the following. Make sure address search is chosen.

  6. Below that, enter the street address of some location in your neighborhood. It might be the address of your organization. It might be your home address. It might be the address of a store in the neighborhood.

For example, let’s say you want to serve the area around Kingsley House . You would type in Kingsley House’s address and then click on the blue “Go” button:

    Example:

  7. Then, you'll see a list of geographies that contain your address. You'll want to select Census Tract by clicking on the text. For the Kingsley House example, you can see it is in Census tract 77.

    Example:

  8. To see what area this Census tract covers and what Census tracts are around it, click. Wait while the map pops up.

  9. Note that the Census tract number appears in the highlighted census tract on the map. Write down this number.

  10. Note what streets border this Census tract. Does this Census tract cover the area you serve? If not, look at the light brown Census tract numbers that appear around your Census tract. Write down those that look like they might include the area you serve.

  11. If you want to verify the boundaries of this additional census tract, the best way to do that is to think of a building within that Census tract and repeat steps 4 through 10 using that address.

Repeat as many times as necessary until you’ve found all theCensus tracts you want information about.

That's the end! Congratulations. Now you can get data for the Census tracts your organization serves.
